Phil 100 F16: Honors Syllabus

This is an amendment to the course syllabus and schedule published elsewhere on this site. This modified syllabus is for students taking Philosophy 100 for Honors credit.

In order to receive Honors credit for the course, students must complete the following additional assignments.
  1. Weekly Journals: Students will turn in a two-page journal entry in which they reflect on the material discussed in the previous week of the course. These journals are open-ended, but students are expected to directly engage with the material assigned for the course. These journals are due in class every week on the first day of class that week. They should be typed, double-spaced in 10-12 point legible font. The first Journal is due the week of September 5.
  2. Extended Essay Assignment: Students taking the course for Honors credit will write an expanded final essay for the course. Details about this assignment will be provided at a later date.
  3. Attend One Event Sponsored by the Honors College: this could involve one of the events put on by the Honors College (a list can be found here) or attendance at a meeting of the Honors Club (details can be found here). After attending students will write a 1-2 page paper summarizing the event. This paper should be typed, double-spaced in a 10-12 point legible font.
Grading: Student grades will be assigned using the same factors that are described on the main syllabus. The Weekly Journals will make up 50% of the homework grade. Failure to attend the Honors Event will lower your final grade by 5%. The essay will be graded using the same standards as described elsewhere.

All other aspects of the syllabus remain the same.
